The Hidden Worlds

Our amazing searchers found all sorts of fantastic things at the Hidden Worlds holiday club… we were looking for invertebrates, exploring with UV torches and kick sampling for invertebrates in the burn.

Kick sampling is a simple but highly-effective way of discovering the hidden wildlife living beneath the surface of rivers and streams. Participants gently disturb the riverbed with their feet for a short period while holding a fine-meshed net downstream to catch the tiny creatures that are washed into it.

The collected invertebrates – such as creatures like mayfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae and stoneflies – are then carefully identified before being returned unharmed to the water.

As well as providing a fun, hands-on learning experience, kick sampling helps people understand the health of freshwater habitats, as the variety and abundance of these species are important indicators of water quality and the overall condition of the ecosystem.
