Wild things! is delighted to welcome eminent Scottish mycologist, Liz Holden, to lead us on a fascinating foray into the enigmatic world of fungi! Liz has well over 30 years experience in her field and Wild things! is delighted to offer this unique opportunity to learn from one of the most respected mycologists in the UK.


You will learn about identifying mushrooms, what is safe to eat and what is not.  We will take an in-depth look at what a fungus actually is, the fundamental role they play in our ecosystem as well as their many varied and surprising uses.

Our day out will provide:

An introduction to fungal biology

Insights into the many functions and features of fungal ecology

The rules, risks and sustainability considerations around collecting

Important macro characteristics to help with identification

Using simple keys to help you get beyond identifying via pictures alone

Insights into the many uses of fungi in human culture including preserving, cooking, paper making, wool dying, and some folklore too!


The day will consist of a walk around Sanquhar Woodland local to Forres where we’ll set up camp and explore the forest. The whole day will take place out of doors unless the weather is severe.


You need to be:

Over 16 years of age

Able to walk for at least one mile over rough terrain


What you need to bring:

  • A packed lunch and drink
  • Suitable outdoor clothing and boots
  • A notepad and pen, or a camera if desired

The day will be based in Sanquhar Woods in Forres, and will run from 10am until 4pm.  After booking you will receive an email with more detailed instructions on where to meet.

Please bring a packed lunch, a drink, notepad and pen or camera.  Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and boots.  We recommend you avoid wearing jeans as these do not dry easily and can become uncomfortable when wet.

This day will introduce you to the fascinating world of Mycology, it is not intended to be a comprehensive course.  Wild things cannot accept responsibility for any harmful wild foods ingested in error, please ensure you carefully check all fungi and other wild foods before consumption.

Fungi Foray is a days walk in the woods. The cost is £50 per person. The fee includes guidance by our instructors, and all necessary equipment and materials. This fee does not include accommodation or any meals.
