Family Tracking Day

Family Tracking Day. Join us for a fun filled family activity day, as we explore the coast and the woodlands, in search of some of the tracks and signs left behind by our native animals.

This wonderful single day event will provide an opportunity to spend time as a family in the outdoors, while discovering some great new skills to share for your own walks through the woods. We will also take time to sit around the open camp fire, to discuss some of the things we have covered throughout the day and share some of our top tips for spotting signs of wildlife in the wilderness.

Many of our native animals are shy or nocturnal, which can often make them difficult to see. However, they will often leave us clues to identify their presence. Spend a day exploring the woodland as a family and discover these tracks and signs first hand, to learn some basic skills and knowledge in animal tracking. Suitable for adults and children aged 8-12.

This Family Tracking Day will run from 10:00am until 2:00pm. We will meet at the mountain bike car par in Sanquhar Woods, in Forres, where you will be introduced to our instructors.

We will search for field evidence as we travel through the woodlands, such as:

  • Tracks
  • Droppings
  • Burrows
  • Nests
  • Feeding Remains

There will also be time to sit around a camp fire, have a warm drink and something to eat, and discuss everything we have seen.

Animal Tacking is a skill which cannot be taught in a single day, but we will introduce you to some of the basic techniques and methods used by experienced animal trackers, that you can use when out on family walks of your own.

Wild things! provide all necessary equipment, tools, and learning resources.

Instruction and supervision is provided by our qualified and experienced Wild things! activity leaders. Maximum group size is 10 participants. Emergency Transport (4-wheel drive vehicle) is always available for outdoor activities.
