Winter Tree I.D. – Identifying Trees in Winter. Join ethnobotanist, Jennie Martin, on a winter walk exploring the woodlands and learning how to identify trees at this glorious time of year. On this walk you will have the chance to identify some evergreen and deciduous trees by using cones, bark, leaves and buds.

You will also learn about some of the ethnobotanical uses of the species we identify; their historical, cultural and medicinal uses.

This event will run from 10:00am until 2:00pm and will be based in Sanquhar Woods, in Forres.

The event will run from 10:00am until 2:00pm and will be based in Sanquhar Woods, in Forres.

The walk will begin with an introduction to the key characteristics used in the identification of trees at this time of year, provide participants with the chance to look at the broad range of native and non-native tree species, and learn how to confidently identify them. You might even be able to keep a couple of cones or twigs for future reference.

We also have the chance to sit and have a lunch break around an open camp fire and discuss everything we have learned and looked at throughout the day.

Wild things! provide all necessary equipment, tools, and learning resources.

Instruction and supervision is provided by our qualified and experienced Wild things! activity leaders. Maximum group size is 10 participants. Emergency Transport (4-wheel drive vehicle) is always available for outdoor activities.

The course will run from 10:00am – 2:00pm and will be based in Sanquhar Woods, in Forres.

All you are required to bring is:

  • A packed lunch
  • Notebook and pen/pencil
  • Sturdy pair of walking boots
  • Warm and waterproof clothing
  • Your enthusiasm for a wonderful day in the outdoors.

We can provide waterproof clothing and warm layers if required.

Winter Tree I.D. Walk is a half day walk through the woodlands. The cost is £25 per person for this event. The fee includes guidance by our instructors, and all necessary equipment and materials. This fee does not include accommodation or any meals.
